ORTHODONTICS & DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDICS

INTRODUCTION OF THE DEPARTMENT

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. An Orthodontist is a specialist who has completed three years of post-graduate training to comprehensively treat these irregularities of teeth, jaws and face.

Orthodontic treatment involves maintaining aesthetic harmony, structural balance and functional efficiency. The orthodontic treatment modalities include simple removable plates, fixed braces to combination of orthodontic and surgical approaches based on the severity of the problems.

The timing of the treatment depends upon the type of problem, age of the patient, affordability and expectations of the parent and patient. The introduction of tooth colored braces (ceramic), invisible (lingual) braces and clear aligners have made this treatment more acceptable by the adult patients.

In the preclinical practical classes & clinical postings they continue with their wire bending exercises. In the clinical postings they are also taught patient examination, case history taking, model analysis, cephalometric analysis, diagnosis & treatment planning. At the end of each posting an end posting exam is conducted to evaluate the performance of the students.

CDE PROGRAMS

1) A CDE programme on “Interdisciplinary Orthodontics” was organized by the department on 4th November 2015. The Guest Speaker for the occasion was Dr. Girish R. Karandikar who highlighted the importance of practice of dentistry from a single specialist or general dentist practices to that of amalgamate team support. Treatment of some malocclusions requires combined efforts of different dental specialties. This topic provided a detail insight to render comprehensive treatment to such patients. (Photo #13 & #14)

2) A CDE was organized by the department on 08 January 2020 on the topic, “Passive Self Ligation - Damon and Class II corrector - AdvanSync 2”. The Guest Speaker for this occasion was Dr. Prasad Chitra who spoke about the Damon system with individualized brackets and highly efficient arch wire which able corrections of all malocclusions types rapidly with minimal patient appointment.
